South African-American actress and producer Charlize Theron was born 50 years ago in Benoni, South Africa, is single and has 2 children.
After finishing primary school, Charlize went to boarding school and at 16 years old, she entered a competition in Italy and won a one-year modelling contract which she spent working around Europe. After the contract ended, she and her mum moved to New York in the US where she attended a ballet school, intending to become a ballet dancer, however, she had to quit due to a knee injury.
In 1994, Theron moved to Los Angeles after her mum bought her a one-way ticket, with the intention of embarking on an acting career. So, Charlize went to an acting school and the following year made her big screen debut in a non-speaking role in the horror movie ‘Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest’. Her first speaking role arrived the year after in ‘2 Days in the Valley’. By the end of the 90s, Theron became more popular after she was cast in movies like ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ and ‘The Cider House Rules’, both box-office hits.
From the year 2000 to date, Charlize appeared in over 40 movies and 10 TV productions, some of which she also produced/exectively produced, voiced animated characters. These include ‘Men of Honour’, ‘Sweet November’, ‘Trapped’, ‘The Italian Job’, ‘Sleepwalking’, ‘The Burning Plain’, ‘Dark Places’, ‘Atomic Blonde’, ‘The Addams Family’ and ‘The Old Guard’. She is currently filming another 2 movies named ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Apex’.
Theron in an avid philanthropist and over the years has supported (and still supports) several charitable institutions regarding HIV/AIDS and women’s rights, amongst others.
During her career so far, Charlize won 25 awards out of 72 nominations, including an Academy and a Golden Globe. She has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.
