CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY TODAY... LUIS MIGUEL

Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri was born 52 years ago in Puerto Rico, and is of Spanish and Italian descent.  He has 3 children but is not married.

Luis became a singer at a very young age.  He was encouraged by his father, who was also a singer, to take up this career and matter of factly, ended up being his manager until 1987.

‘Un Sol’ was Luis’s first album, released in 1982 when he was only 11 years old.  It was an immediate success and 2 years later he began touring Latin American countries and meanwhile issued 3 more albums.

In 1985, Luis participated in Italy’s San Remo Music Festival and placed second with the song ‘Noi Ragazzi di Oggi’.  From that year til 2017, 16 studio albums were released, and almost all of them reached number one position in many Latin American countries.  These apart from the compilation, live and soundtrack albums as well as extended plays.

Despite that Luis sings only in his native Spanish language, he is considered as the best-selling Latin artist of all time.  His records sold 60 million copies globally whilst his best album ever, ‘Romance’ released in 1991, alone sold 7 million records around the world.  This album helped him achieve international stardom.  In 1993, Frank Sinatra, in honour of his 80th birthday, invited Luis to perform in duet live in a special TV programme, alongside stars like Natalie Cole and Stevie Wonder.

Additionally, Luis also won numerous awards during the course of his career, namely 6 US  Grammy & 6 Latin Grammy, 3 World Music and 14 Billboard Latin Music, amongst many others.
