TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY...GIANLUCA BEZZINA

Gianluca Bezzina was born 33 years ago in Qrendi, Malta, is married and has 3 children.  He professionally works as a doctor and is a part-time singer.

When he was 7 years old, Gianluca started taking piano accordion lessons and at the same time joined the Malta Children’s Choir to improve his singing abilities.  His grandad, who was a song composer and well-known locally, always motivated Gianluca to ameliorate his singing and he was also extremely inspired by juvenile groups, particularly the Youth Fellowship which he still frequently attends.

In 2013, Gianluca represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Tomorrow’, placing 8th.  The song also managed to enter the UK Singles Chart.  Two years later, together with his 5 siblings who formed the band ‘L-Ahwa’, took part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Beautiful to Me’.

Gianluca was one of the presenters of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest semi-final and final held in February 2014, alongside singer Ira Losco and TV personality Moira Delia.  He and Ira also sang in duet ‘Let Her Go’ and ‘Feeling Good’.  A month later, Bezzina performed in a show organised by his sister, and which paid a tribute to his late grandfather.  Together with his siblings, Gianluca sang a total of 24 songs in the Maltese language which had actually been written by his grandad.

Bezzina was the lead singer of the group ‘Funk Initiative’ with whom 3 singles were released.  In June 2014, the band won the competition ‘Isle of MTV Battle of the Bands’ and a month later inaugurated the Isle of MTV concert.
