British singer-songwriter, musician and record producer David Knopfler was born 72 years ago in Blyth, Northumberland, is married and has a son. He is the younger brother of rock band ‘Dire Straits’ lead singer Mark Knopfler.
At the age of 4, David moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne with his family and later went to grammar school. At 11 years old, he already had a drum kit, a guitar as well as a piano and by the time he reached 14, he used to perform his own music in folk clubs. Knopfler obtained a university degree in economics, and afterwards moved to London and worked as a social worker.
In 1977, rhythm guitarist David co-founded the band ‘Dire Straits’ together with his brother Mark who was the lead singer/guitarist and 2 other members who played the bass and drums.
After the release of the group’s debut and second albums, stress caused by all the work that was involved regarding song composition, recording, touring etc started to show in the brothers and eventually in 1980 David decided to leave the band whilst their third album was being recorded.
Three years later i.e. in 1983, David’s debut solo album came out, with the collaboration of his brother Mark and the bassist of ‘Dire Straits’. By the end of the 80s, 3 more albums were released. Also during that decade, Mark scored the soundtracks for 4 movies, 2 of which were German productions.
From the beginning of 90s to date, David had 18 more albums. Over the years, he has also collaborated with several other artists in their musical projects and toured various countries including the UK, US, Canada, Spain and Germany. In 2005, Knopfler published a poetry book.
