TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... SEAN CONNERY

Scottish actor and producer Sir Sean Connery was born as Thomas Sean Connery on 25th August 1930 in Edinburgh and passed away on 31st October 2020.  He was married and had a son.

When he was 16, Sean joined the Royal Navy but left 3 years after due to a medical condition.  He began to practise bodybuilding at the age of 18, worked in several jobs and loved football.  In his 20s, he was offered a contract by former Manchester United manager Matt Busby but turned it down and opted for an acting career instead.

In 1951, Sean helped at a theatre and later auditioned for a local musical and was successful.  He was given a part in it and was so popular that the following year it was produced again and this time Sean acted in a more important role.  He also met actor Michael Caine and they became good friends.

During the rest of the 50s, Sean became more and more interested in theatre and performed in various stage productions.  He also starred in several films including ‘Hell Drivers’, ‘Another Time’, ‘Another Place, Another Time’ and ‘Darby O’Gill and the Little People’, amongst others.

Stardom really struck when he acted in 5 movies as the charismatic spy James Bond 007 between 1962 and 1967.  He played the same role in another 2 James Bond films in 1971 and 1983.  Whilst filming the James Bond movies, Sean starred in other films amongst which there were ‘Marnie’ and ‘The Hill’.  After the James Bond movies, Sean was considered as a sex symbol and years later was voted as ‘The sexiest man Alive’ as well as ‘Sexiest man of the Century’.

In spite of becoming a famous movie star after acting in these films, Sean admitted that he really hated the James Bond role and wished he (JB) would die!  People associated him with the movie character and the phrase ‘My name is Bond…James Bond’ became very popular right after his first James Bond movie.

During his long career, he acted in about 70 movies and 20 TV productions.  A few of his most famous films include ‘Indiana Jones & the last Crusade’, ‘The Hunt for Red October’, ‘The Untouchables’ and ‘The Rock’.

Six authors have published books regarding this famous personality and in 2024, an annual award in his honour was established by the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Connery won an Academy, a British Academy Film and 3 Golden Globe Awards and was also honoured with the title of Knight Bachelor by HM Queen Elizabeth II in the year 2000.

Sean passed away at the age of 90 from pneumonia and heart failure.
