American singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman was born on 30th March 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio.
When she was just 3 years old, her mum gifted her with an ukulele. Five years later, she started writing songs as well as play the guitar. After graduating from high school, Tracy attended university and obtained a degree in African studies and Anthropology. When she was a university student, Tracy used to give street performances in nearby locations.
Chapman’s music career took off when she performed at a theatre as an opening act for another renowned singer. After he heard her playing, a fellow student introduced her to his father, who owned a record label company, and signed her.
A year later she changed record label company and went on to release her first album, which turned out to be very successful and peaked to number one in several countries. It included the tracks ‘Fast Car’, ‘Talking ’bout a Revolution’ and ‘Baby can I hold You’. Another album was released the following year, however, it was not as successful as the first one, although it did reach number one in some countries.
From the beginning of the 90s to date, Tracy had 8 more albums and 17 singles. She sang in duet with other famous artists like B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Luciano Pavarotti, amongst others, as well as performed in several important festivals including charitable events, and TV programmes.
So far, Tracy received 11 awards, including 4 Grammy, 2 Brit, 1 Billboard Music and 1 American Music.
