German singer Manfred Alois Segieth, professionally known as Fancy, was born 77 years ago in Munich and is also a record producer and musician.
As a kid, Manfred went to grammar school and whilst still a student joined a band named ‘Mountain Shadows’ with whom he sang cover versions of tracks by Sir Cliff Richard. He graduated from high school and then trained how to publish magazines and newspapers, as well as worked as a music publisher.
During the 70s, he sang German Schlager under the stage name ‘Tess Teiges’, worked as a furniture decorator for discotheques and pubs as well as an artist and magician. In addition, he was also a producer for a record company.
In 1984, Manfred released his debut single ‘Slice me Nice’ which was a commercial success, followed by other tracks like ‘Chinese Eyes’, ‘Get Lost Tonight’ and ‘L.A.D.Y.O.’, which ‘sculpted’ his music style, accompanied by his distinctive outfits and heavy makeup. A year later, he had another big hit named ‘Bolero’ which spent 6 months on the Spanish music charts and was also a Top 10 hit in several European countries.
His greatest international hits, however, were ‘Lady of Ice’ in 1986 and ‘Flames of Love’ two years later. Also during that decade, Manfred produced several tracks, including the remix of Pet Shop Boys’ song ‘West End Girls’. He continued to collaborate with other artists during the 90s as well, plus releasing his own albums and singles. To date, Fancy released 19 albums, 21 compilations and numerous singles.
Manfred also appeared on various TV shows and published 2 books.
