CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY TODAY... HOWARD JONES

English singer/songwriter and musician John Howard Jones was born 69 years ago in Southampton, Hampshire and is married.

Howard attended primary and 2 grammar schools and when he was 7 years old, started to learn the piano.  When he was a teenager, he emigrated to Canada with his family and joined a progressive rock band named ‘Warrior.  He returned to the UK in the mid 70s and performed with several bands and attended a Music college.

Jones performed as a solo artist in local places and rented a famous club, inviting record companies to view his performances.  He was particularly influenced by the electronic band OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) and singer Stevie Wonder.  

His debut single ‘New Song’ came out in September 1983 and was a UK number 3 hit.   Six months later, his debut album was released, which peaked to number one on the UK charts and was also certified both gold and platinum in numerous countries.  It featured another 2 UK Top 10 hits, namely ‘What is Love?’ and ‘Pearl in the Shell’, which placed 2nd and 7th respectively.

His next single ‘Like to get to know you Well’ released in the summer of 1984 was a worldwide hit, and was also used in the movie ‘Better off Dead’ which was came out the following year, as well as in the 2006 video game ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories’.

In 1985, Howard’s second album was released and was his most successful one.  It included the tracks ‘No one is to Blame’ ‘Life in one Day’, ‘Things can only get Better’ and ‘Look Mama’.  Until the end of the 80s, 2 more albums were released.

His 5th albums came out in 1992, but failed to chart.  Jones then focused more on writing songs for other artists, production, starting his own record label and even running a restaurant.

In the last 3 decades, Howard had 28 albums, 16 singles and 1 EP.
