English singer-songwriter and musician John Stephen Parr was born 72 years ago in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
John’s music career began in 1984 when he released his debut single ‘Naughty Naughty’. It reached no 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and no 58 on the UK Singles chart the following year. That same year, John together with his group embarked on a tour to act as a supporting band to the rock band ‘TOTO’.
When the tour ended, Parr was approached by a Canadian music producer to record a track for the movie ‘St Elmo’s Fire, which he accepted. Together, they wrote and produced the song ‘St Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion) and was dedicated to activist and wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen. This track was sung by John himself and was also a very successful hit, so much so that it peaked to number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained in first place for 2 weeks.
Over the years, Parr composed and sang 9 more theme tracks for major movies amongst which there are ‘The Running Man’, ‘Butterbrot’, ‘Go Trabi Go’, American Anthem’ and ‘Three Men and a Baby’.
To date, John released 5 studio, 1 live and 1 soundtrack album, plus 22 singles. One of these singles, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Mercenaries’, released in 1986, was sung in due with Meatloaf. He also wrote and produced songs for other artists.
