Belgian singer-songwriter, musician, producer, editor and TV presenter Plastic Bertrand was born 71 years ago as Roger Francois Jouret in Brussels. He never married.
When he was 9 years old, Roger formed the ‘Buffalo Scouts Band’ and was its singer and drummer. They sang cover versions of songs by ‘The Rolling Stones’. Afterwards, he created another group named ‘The Pelicans’ (which later on changed its name to ‘Passing the Time’) and they performed at parties, bars, clubs and festivals.
Since he was still a student, Jouret continued his studies at the Music Academy where he took percussion and music theory lessons, obtained a degree and then studied design for a year. In 1973, he was admitted in the Royal Conservatory of Music where he continued studying percussion and music theory, as well as music history. The following year, Roger formed a band called ‘Hubble Bubble’ and together the group did rehearsals, gave concerts whilst he also worked as stage manager and simultaneously proceeded with his studies. In 1975, the group released 2 albums but after one the group’s members’ death, it disbanded.
Two years later, i.e. in 1977, Roger embarked on a solo career and released the French number one single ‘Ca plane pour moi’. He toured Europe, the US, Japan and even Australia. During the 80s, he lived in Italy for 3 years, appeared in some movies and participated in the Eurovision song contest representing Luxembourg with the track ‘Amour, Amour’. He also had a hit song named ‘Hula Hoop’ which reached number 3 on the Italian charts.
To date, Plastic Bertrand had 10 studio albums, 9 compilation and 44 singles. Over the years, he continued writing and producing songs, not just for himself but also for various other artists, composed tracks for movies, as well as performed in numerous concerts.
