Singer, actress, comedian and author Bette Midler was born 80 years ago in Honolulu, Hawaii, is married and has a daughter.
After attending high school, Bette studied drama at university and later participated as an extra in the movie ‘Hawaii’ in 1966. After moving to New York, she took theatre lessons and took part in several stage plays, one of which was the famous ‘Fiddler on the Roof ‘.
At the beginning of the 70s, Bette started to sing in a hotel and released her first album, in collaboration with singer Barry Manilow. A second album followed, and both were extremely successful.
For 3 years, Midler voiced a character in a children’s TV programme and during that same period presented a TV special and released a live album. Then, in 1979, she starred for the first time in the movie ‘The Rose’, playing the role of a rock-star who was a drug addict.
During the 80s, Bette acted in more movies, mainly comedies, which went very well in the box office and rendered her a star. These include ‘Ruthless People’, ‘Outrageous Fortune’, ‘Big Business’ and ‘Beaches’. ‘Beaches’ featured the song ‘Wind Beneath my Wings’, which became Bette’s most famous hit. She also was one of the numerous artists who participated in the song for charity ‘We are the World’, as well as performed in the concert ‘Live Aid’.
In the last 3 decades, Midler continued with both her singing and acting careers and starred in several movies, TV programmes and theatrical productions. In 2026, she is expected to star in the comedy movie ‘Cut Off’ which is currently filming and is scheduled to be released in July next year in the US. With regards to music, Midler had more successful hits like ‘From a Distance’ and ‘I’m Beautiful’. She also wrote 3 books.
During her long career, Bette received 33 awards out of 92 nominations, including 4 Golden Globe, 3 Grammy and 3 Primetime Emmy, amongst many others. In 1985, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in 2019 she was honoured as a Disney Legend by the Walt Disney Company, whilst in 2021 she received a Kennedy Centre Honours Medal. Midler is also an avid philanthropist and is known for her monetary support towards various charitable institutions.
