CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY TODAY...CYNDI LAUPER

Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton was born 69 years ago in New York City, USA, is married and has a son.  She sings and writes songs, and is also an actress and activist.  Cyndi is best known for her unique image with various hair colours and particular clothing styles.

Her favourite childhood artists were Judy Garland and the Beatles.  She started writing songs at the age of 17 and was also interested in art.  Consequently, she attended art lessons and later obtained an honorary degree.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Cyndi sang with bands that played other artists’ songs, however, she was not satisfied with this.  In 1977, Cindi was constrained to quit singing since she hurt her vocal chords and was told that she could never sing again.

Nevertheless, she proved everyone wrong and resumed singing the year after.  The group Blue Angel was formed and Cyndi recorded an album with them which, however, was not successful.  This caused the band to split.

In 1983, Cyndi continued as a solo artist and her first album was an instant success globally.  It includes the famous hits ‘Girls just wanna have Fun’, ‘Time after Time’ and ‘She Bop’.  Her next two albums also featured other successful songs like ‘True Colors’ and ‘I Drove all Night’.  She also participated with numerous other artists in the song for charity ‘We are the World’ in 1985.

In 2008, Cyndi founded the True Colors United, which is an organisation that helps homeless LGBT youths.  She even built the True Colors Residence to give these youths shelter and help them find a job.

Throughout her 45-year music career, Cyndi had 33 albums, 51 singles and 33 music videos, which sold around 50 million copies around the world.  She was honoured with an impressive 46 awards, including 4 Billboard Music, 2 Grammy, 3 MTV Video Music and 1 Emmy.

Apart from performing in concerts around the world, Lauper also starred in several movies and TV programmes, appeared in other TV shows and was also a guest in concerts of other music artists like Tina Turner, Rod Stewart and Cher.
