Singer Michael Cretu was born 66 years ago in Bucharest, Romanian People’s Republic, is married and has twin sons. He is also a songwriter, composer, producer and musician.
As a child, he began to study the piano as well as classic music at a local school. When he was 18, Michael travelled to Germany to continue with his studies and eventually graduated, obtaining a degree in music composition.
Afterwards, Michael worked as a session musician, precisely as a keyboardist and later co-created a new wave group named ‘Moti Special’. They released an album which included the European hit single ‘Cold Days, Hot Nights’. In 1990, after 9 years, Cretu decided to leave the band.
Michael’s solo career started in 1979 with the release of his debut album ‘Moon, Light and Flowers’. During the 80s, 2 more albums and 15 singles were issued. Also throughout that decade, Michael collaborated with various artists with song writing as well as album production. In particular, he wrote, produced and acted as backing vocalist for 11 of his ex-wife German singer Sandra’s albums.
In 1990, Cretu created the musical project trio ‘Enigma’ and they eventually released their debut album which was extremely successful, and which included the unexpected international hit single ‘Sadeness – Part 1’. Three years later, the second album came out and the following year ‘Enigma’ had their second international hit single ‘Return to Innocence’. Until 2016, 6 more albums were released, mostly produced by Michael.
Cretu’s recordings reached estimated sales of more than 100 million copies globally, as stated by his management company.
