English singer and songwriter Robert Anthony Plant was born 74 years ago in Staffordshire, is divorced and has 4 children.
As a child, Robert began to show interest in singing and the rock and roll genre. Once he stated that he wanted to be like Elvis Presley. Later on as a teenager, he became passionate about the blues genre and at 16 left home to join various groups to deepen his knowledge in music.
In 1968, Robert met guitarist Jimmy Page and together with other 2 members formed the famous band Led Zeppelin. They went on to release their first album a year later, which was a big success. Robert also began to write some of the band’s songs.
During the production of the band’s 7th album in 1975, Robert and his wife were involved in a serious car crash in Greece and the band who were on tour, had to cancel the rest of the planned tour dates. Then, 2 years later, Plant’s 5-year old son died whilst the group were on a US tour and Robert was so devastated that he was unsure of what he would do in the future with regards to his profession.
Throughout the 70s, Robert gained great popularity, particularly with his unique image, how he dressed and the gestures he did whilst performing on stage, like clapping, dancing, jumping etc.
Led Zeppelin split up in December 1980 and Robert pursued a solo career. To date, 20 albums were issued, 3 of them in collaboration with other artists, 2 box sets and 42 singles. Some of his most famous hits which reached number one on the US charts include ‘Other Arms’, ‘Little by Little’ and ‘Heaven Knows’.
Robert received a few awards, amongst which he was honoured with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire medal for his music services in 2009.
