Nigerian-born British singer/songwriter Sade was born 65 years ago in Ibadan as Helen Folasade Adu, is married and has a son.
When she was a child, Sade moved to England with her mum and brother and attended high school and institute. She then took a 3-year course in fashion design and worked for some time as a model. Afterwards, Sade joined a group named ‘Pride’ as backup singer and in 1983 left the band with some other group members and created her own band ‘Sade’.
In 1984, their first album was released, featuring the US number one hit ‘Smooth Operator’ and the Top 10 UK hit ‘Your love is King’. The album itself was extremely successful in numerous countries, peaking to number one and selling more than 6 million copies worldwide.
The following year, the band’s second album came out and likewise, was a major success. It included the singles ‘Never as good as the first Time’ and ‘The Sweetest Taboo’. After the release of 2 more albums, the band took an 8-year break and in the year 2000 released their 5th album and embarked on a world tour to promote it. This helped the group to gain further popularity and their performances attracted millions of people around the world.
Sade then decided to take a 10-year break and moved to the Caribbean to raise her son. So, it was in 2010 when her band’s 6th album was released, with repeated success. The group went on a live tour around the globe which ended in 2011, after which the band stopped once again for the third time.
In 2018, the band reunited and released the songs ‘Flower of the Universe’ and ‘The Big Unknown’ for the soundtracks of a couple of movies, as well as recorded their 7th album.
In all, Sade had 15 albums, 23 singles, 2 EPs and 20 music videos. She was honoured with 4 Grammy, 2 Porin, 1 Brit, 2 ASCAP Pop Music and an American Music Award. Moreover, in 2002, she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire and 15 years later was promoted to Commander of the Same Order for her services to music. She has influenced several artists of different music genres and was called a ‘pop star’.
