
American singer-songwriter Anita Denise Baker was born 68 years ago in Toledo, Ohio, is divorced and has 2 sons.
When she was just a toddler, Anita was abandoned by her mum and consequently raised in Michigan by a foster family. Her foster parents passed away when she was 12 years old and so she was raised by her foster sister.
When she was 16, Anita started singing R & B in nightclubs and in 1975 joined the band ‘Chapter 8’ as lead singer and toured with them. However, the group’s record company thought she did not have potential and Anita left the group. She worked a couple of jobs and afterwards embarked on a solo career.
Anita released her debut solo album in 1983, featuring songs like ‘No more Tears’, ‘Will you be Mine’, ‘You’re the best thing Yet’ and the Top 10 single ‘Angel’. Her second album came out 3 years later, including a string of successful hits. She went on tour to promote it and started working on her third album which was released in 1988 and like its previous ones, was extremely successful.
In 1990, Baker released her 4th album and then took a break and gave birth to her sons. Afterwards, she embarked on a world tour and once ended, Anita took a 5-year hiatus to raise her sons and resumed her career in 2000.
In the last 25 years, Anita had 2 more albums and 4 singles and her latest tour took place in 2023.
During her career, Baker received 8 Grammy, 4 American Music, 7 Soul Train Music, 1 Canadian Smooth Jazz and 1 BET Awards. In 2013, she was inducted in the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. She is also considered as one of the most famous soulful ballad singers.
