Italian singer Antonella Ruggiero was born 71 years ago in Genova, in the region of Liguria, is married and has a son.
Antonella finished her studies at an arts institute and later worked in an advertising studio as a graphic designer for a short period of time. Her singing career initiated in 1974 when she released her first 45 rpm under the stage name ‘Matia’. She also acted as backing vocalist for the rock band ‘J.E.T.’ and the following year co-founded the group ‘Matia Bazar’ with some of the members.
Ruggiero remained with the group for 14 years until 1989, during which time they released 11 albums and enjoyed a string of successes with tracks like ‘Stasera che sera’, ‘Solo Tu’, ‘Vancanze Romane’, ‘Souvenir’ and ‘Ti Sento’. She then took a 7-year hiatus to dedicate more time to her family as well as herself, and in 1996 resumed her career, this time as a solo artist, and released her debut album ‘Libera’.
In 1998 and 1999, Antonella participated in the yearly San Remo Music Festival and arrived in 2nd place on both occasions with the songs ‘Amore Lontanissimo’ and ‘Non ti dimenticao’ respectively. Both tracks were composed by herself and her husband. She competed 4 more times at the SRMF.
Since the year 2000, Ruggiero released 23 albums and 6 singles and from the beginning of her solo career, Antonella embarked on numerous tours and performed in several other concerts around Italy. She also collaborated with various singers/bands, acting as backing vocalist as well as songwriter. With her high vocal range as light soprano, she also took part in theatrical performances, particularly operas.
During her long career, Ruggiero received several awards including a Lunezia prize for San Remo and a Volare Award for Best Music.
