American singer Belinda Jo Carlisle was born on 17th August 1958 in Los Angeles, California, is married and has a son.
When she was 10 years old, Belinda started showing interest in music and was inspired by big artists like the Beach Boys, The Animals and Cat Stevens. As a teenager, she went to High School and afterwards worked various jobs till she was 19 and pursued a music career.
Belinda’s first debut in music was in 1977, as a drummer with a group named ‘The Germs’ and later as a back-up singer with another band. Two years later, she created the all-girl group ‘The Go-Go’s’, who composed the group’s songs as well as played their own instruments.
In the course of 5 years, the band released 3 albums which all proved very successful, rendering the group one of the best and most popular during the 80s. Some of the hits that featured in these albums were ‘We got the Beat’, ‘Our Lips are Sealed’, and ‘Head over Heels’.
After the band split up in 1985, Belinda continued as a solo artist and in 1986 her first album was issued, which included the hit ‘Mad about You’. She also recorded songs which were used as soundtracks for movies like ‘Mannequin’, ‘Burglar’ and ‘Out of Bounds’.
Real fame struck with her second album with the number one hit ‘Heaven is a place on Earth’, together with equally popular hits like ‘Circle in the Sand’, I get Weak’ and ‘World without You’. More success arrived with the albums that followed, which included the tracks ‘Leave a light On’, ‘Summer Rain’ and ‘La Luna’, amongst others.
As a solo artist, to date Belinda had 23 albums, 31 music videos, 2 box sets and 42 singles, excluding those with the ‘Go-Go’s’. She was nominated 23 times for various awards but never won. In 2010, Carlisle published an autobiography book which was also a best-seller.
As a philanthropist, Belinda actively supports LGBT rights and also created a non-profit organisation in India named Animal People Alliance.
