TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... BORIS GARDINER

Jamaican singer-songwriter and bass guitarist Boris Gardiner was born 82 years ago in the capital city of Kingston, is divorced and has 3 children.

He took his education in a government school and proceeded to college, however, he left school due to being diagnosed with a heart condition called tachycardia.

During the 60s, Boris was a member of various bands and during these years started to learn the guitar.  He acted as vocalist and bass guitarist and later formed the group ‘The Bronchos’.  Gardiner collaborated significantly with these bands as session musician, particularly in the release of some of their hits.

In 1970, Boris released the solo hit single ‘Elizabethan Raggae’ as well as his debut album, and went on to release 4 more albums during that decade.

In 1986, i.e. after 13 years from his latest album, Gardiner recorded the single ‘I wanna wake up with You’, which surprisingly, was a UK number one hit, spending 2 months in the Top Ten chart.  It also peaked to number one in Australia.  Two more singles were released later on that year, however, they were not as popular as the first one.

From the beginning of the 90s to date, Boris had 3 studio albums and 2 compilations.  No singles were released after the end of the 80s.  In 2016, one of his songs named ‘Every Nigger is a Star’ was the opening track for the movie ‘Moonlight’.
