TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... EDDIE MONEY

American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Eddie Money was born on 21st March 1949 as Edward Joseph Mahoney in New York City and passed away on 13th September 2019.  He was married and has 5 children.

At 11 years old, Eddie gave singing performances in the streets and as a teenager he used to play with some rock bands.  In 1967, he graduated from a public high school and soon found a clerk/typist job in a police department.  Eddie wished to grow his hair long, but since it was not allowed, he quit work after a short period of time, aiming to embark on a music career, and started taking saxophone lessons.

Money then moved to another city, studied vocals and performed regularly in clubs.  He managed to obtain a record contract and in 1977 his debut album was released.  It featured the 2 charted singes ‘Baby Hold On’ and ‘Two Tickets to Paradise’.  The following year, he performed the opening act for the band ‘Santana’.

At the beginning of the 80s, Eddie appeared in some TV music variety shows whilst he continued issuing albums.  After his 5th one was released, he suffered a career decline but got back on track 3 years later with the issuance of his 6th album, which was also certified platinum.  It included the single ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ which placed 4th on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.  From then until his demise, Money released 5 more albums and 15 singles, 6 compilation, 3 live and 4 EPs.  He also composed and sang some movie tracks, guest appeared in more TV productions, and even hosted a radio programme for about 3 months.

In 1987, Eddie was nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Best Male Rock Vocal Performance’ for his track ‘Take Me Home Tonight’, and in 2008, he was inducted in the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

Eddie passed away on 13th September 2019 from oesophageal cancer at the age of 70.
