Gloria Gaynor nee’ Fowles was born 79 years ago in New Jersey, USA and is a singer as well as a songwriter. She is divorced with no children.
As a child, she loved listening to the radio, particularly songs by Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole. Gloria’s dad was a professional singer and musician who sang and played with a group in nightclubs whilst her brothers sang gospel music.
In 1960, Gloria went to high school and graduated a year later. During that decade, she sang with a jazz and R & B group named ‘The Soul Satisfiers’ and also recorded her first solo song called ‘She’ll be Sorry/Let me go Baby’.
Real success arrived in the 70s with the album ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ which featured three songs which were sung one after the other non-stop. These became very popular on the dance floors, especially the hit ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ which topped various music charts.
The album that followed was equally successful and Gloria’s hits continued to gain more popularity, particularly in night clubs. More albums were released, however, the most popular song she recorded was released in 1978, named ‘I will Survive’, featured in her 6th album.
In the late 70s and during the 80s, she had a couple of more successful dance hits, namely ‘Let me know, I have a Right’ and ‘I am what I Am’. During the last 30 years, Gloria had 16 more albums and 11 singles.
Gloria appeared in several TV shows and a couple of movies and wrote her autobiography. She also won 2 Grammy Awards and was honoured with a Doctor of Music Degree.
