English dance/pop singer Hazell Dean nee` Poole was born 71 years ago in Great Baddow, Essex, is in a civil partnership and has a daughter.
Initially, Hazell performed in clubs, particularly hi-NRG music. From the mid 70s to the end of that decade, she released some pop/soul singles and in 1976 participated in the ‘A Song for Europe’ contest, arriving in 8th place.
Dean’s debut album came out in 1981, featuring cover tracks which were only promoted on radio stations. It was followed by a double A-side single the year after. She then decided to change music genre and recorded the dance hit ‘Searchin’ (I gotta find a Man)’ which although was very successful in clubs, did not fare well on the charts. It did, however, achieve a big success in 1984 when it was re-released and reached no: 6 on the UK charts. Just a month after, this track was followed by a second hit single ‘Whatever I do’ (wherever I go) which reached no: 4.
From the late 80s to date, Hazell had 14 more albums and over 25 singles. These include a whole album featuring tracks by supergroup ABBA as well as a cover version of rock band Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a Prayer’. She has also composed and produced songs for other artists such as Bad Boys Inc, Men 2 B and Sandra Feva, amongst others. Dean stopped performing live as of September 2021.
The Federation of American Dance elected Hazell thrice as ‘Best Live Performer’ whilst the Club Mirror Awards UK awarded her twice as ‘Best British Performer’. She was also an active performer in LGBT events both in her country and internationally, and was honoured as Patron of Pride in Surrey.
