TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY...LENNY KRAVITZ

Leonard Albert Kravitz was born 59 years ago in New York City, USA, is divorced and has a daughter.  He is a singer/songwriter, record producer and actor.

At just 3 years old, Lenny started banging on pots and pans, pretending they were drums.  Two years later, he thought he would become a musician and learnt the drums as well as the guitar plus listening to different music genres like jazz, R&B, blues, gospel etc.  After seeing the ‘Jackson 5’ during one of their performances, they became his idols.

When he was 10, Kravitz joined a choir and sang classical music and opera.  In later years, he began to listen to rock bands such as Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and many others.  When in high school, Lenny learnt the piano and bass and was inspired by artists like Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley and John Lennon, amongst others.

Kravitz’s music career took off in the mid-80s, however, his debut album was released in 1989 and was particularly successful in Europe.  At the beginning of the 90s, Lenny produced the song ‘Justify my Love’ for Madonna as well as French singer Vanessa Paradis’ debut album a year later, plus the release of his own second album.  Three more albums were issued during that decade whilst also continuing to collaborate with other artists.

During the last 2 decades, Lenny released 7 more albums, 4 box sets, 35 singles and 30 music videos.  With estimated album sales of 40 million copies globally, he is considered as one of the best-selling artists in the rock genre of his time.  Apart from music, Lenny appeared in some movies as well as TV productions.

To date, Kravitz has received 25 awards, including 4 Grammy and ASCAP Pop Music.
