TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY...LIMAHL

Limahl in the 80s
Limahl today

English singer Limahl was born as Christopher Hamill on 18th December 1958 in Wigan, Lancashire.

After high school, he attended a theatre repertory company, aiming to become an actor.  In the early 80s, Limahl starred briefly in an episode of a TV police series as well as acted as an extra in a video of the band ‘Adam and the Ants’.

As he loved music, Limahl formed a punk band called ‘Vox Deus’ which disbanded shortly afterwards and also was part of another 2 groups named ‘Crossword’ and ‘Brooks’.  Then, after responding to an advert of the band ‘Art Nouveau’ who were looking for a frontman, Limahl settled with them and the group’s name was later changed to ‘Kajagoogoo’.

Limahl met Nick Rhodes, who is the band ‘Duran Duran’s keyboardist, at the bar where he was working as a waiter and together composed ‘Too Shy’, Kajagoogoo’s first single and number one UK hit.  The band had more hits which reached the UK Top 20, including ‘Ooh to be Ah’ and ‘Hang on Now’.

In mid-1983, Limahl was fired from the band, apparently due to different views about the group’s future, and immediately pursued a solo career.  He soon had a Top 20 hit ‘Only for Love’ and the following year another big hit ‘The NeverEnding Story’ which arrived to 4th place in the UK charts.  This song was the title track of the movie with the same name.

Limahl’s debut album was a UK commercial flop, however, it did go better in some other European countries, placing with the Top 10.  Two more albums followed in 1986 and 1992 and likewise were unsuccessful in the UK and a little better in other countries.

During the last 2 decades, he reunited twice with the band members of ‘Kajagoogoo’ and toured with them around Europe.  Limahl himself released a couple of songs as a solo artist and also appeared in a few TV shows.
