Hugh Anthony Cregg III was born on 5th July 1950 in New York city, USA, is divorced and has 2 children. He sings and writes songs and is also an actor.
When he was a teen, Huey used to hitchhike throughout the States and whilst waiting for a ride, he learnt the harmonica. Once, after a 3-day waiting at the airport, he secretly boarded an aircraft and travelled to Europe. There he continued to hitchhike and did street performances and soon became a skilled blues player. With the money he earned, he bought a ticket to go back home.
Lewis then took engineering at University but soon dropped out. He attempted to do different jobs but his main aim was music. In fact, he joined a group named ‘Slippery Elm’ in 1969 and 2 years later another band named ‘Clover’, of which he was the lead singer and played the harmonica.
Their 2 albums proved unsuccessful and the group split up. Huey continued to give performances with other musicians and went on to form the group ‘Huey Lewis & the News’. Their first album was a failure, but 2 years later success finally arrived with their second album.
In 1983, the group had the 4 singles ‘Heart and Soul’, ‘I want a new Drug’, ‘The Heart of Rock and Roll’ and ‘If this is It’ place in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.
Then, in 1985 the band recorded the number one hit ‘The Power of Love’ for the movie ‘Back to the Future’, in which Lewis also starred briefly. That same year, the group participated in the song for charity ‘We are the World’ by ‘USA for Africa’.
To date, Huey Lewis & the News released 14 albums and 39 singles. As for Huey, he contributed with several other artists and also acted in a few TV roles.
