Maltese singer Lawrence Gray was born 50 years ago in Sta Lucia, is married to singer Maronia Attard and has a son.
Lawrence showed his singing talent from a young age and had his first singing experience at the age of 8. He took ballet and modern dance lessons as well as stage and voice training and managed to obtain distinction certificates.
Early in his career, Gray appeared in musicals, TV programmes and was also involved in the ‘Miss Malta’ beauty contest artistic work. In 1997, he joined the rock band ‘Meer’ as its frontman and lead vocalist and together they recorded 6 tracks.
Over the years, Lawrence participated in various music festivals, both locally and internationally. Amongst these there is the Malta Eurovision Song Contest (previously known as Malta Song for Europe) in which he competed 8 times and placed 2nd twice with the songs ‘The Right Time’ in 1999 and ‘Why Not’ in 2003. He was also the winner of the International Festival of the Maltese song 1998 and 2002 editions. Gray arrived 2nd in ‘L-Ghanja tal-Poplu’ and won the ‘Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2002’.
Abroad, he took part in ‘International Voice of Asia’, ‘Universetalent’ in Prague and ‘111 International Music Festival’ in Jugoslavia, winning several awards. In addition, Lawrence performed main roles in numerous musicals such as ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ’10th Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables’, ‘It-Tieg ta’ Karmena Abdilla’, ‘Manwel’, ‘Scrooge’ and ‘Il-Perit’. He was also invited to sing in some countries like Cyprus, Sicily and the US, was resident singer in local TV shows and also sang local villages/towns feasts’ anthem songs.
Lawrence released 3 albums, 2 singles and a music video.
