American actor Tom Selleck was born 80 years ago as Thomas William Selleck in Detroit, Michigan, is married and has 2 children.

After graduating from high school, Tom went to college, followed by university, where he studied Business Administration and played both baseball and basketball.  After he was encouraged by a drama teacher to attempt acting, Selleck left university and enrolled in an acting school.  At the age of 21, Tom served military service for 6 years and obtained a sergeant rank.

Selleck’s small screen debut began in 1965 when he was a college senior in a game show and then appeared in some commercials.  At the beginning of the 70s, he started starring in small film roles, TV movies and series as well as doing more adverts. In 1979, Tom began to be offered lead cowboy roles, particularly in western movies, since he was a keen weapon collector, marksman and loved the outdoors.  That year he starred in ‘The Sacketts’ and ‘Concrete Cowboys’ and 3 years later in ‘The Shadow Riders’.

Tom’s career breakthrough and fame arrived when he portrayed private investigator Thomas Magnum in the famous crime drama series ‘Magnum P.I.’, which aired between 1980 and 1988 for a total of 163 episodes.  He was renowned for his moustache, Hawaiian-style aloha shirt and a Detroit Tigers baseball cap.  Whilst starring in this series, Selleck also acted in some movies including ‘Three Men and a Baby’, ‘Her Alibi’ and ‘An Innocent Man’.

From 1990 to date, Tom appeared in over 30 TV series/movies and 13 films.  These include ‘Friends’, ‘The Closer’, ‘Las Vegas’, ‘Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise’, ‘Blue Bloods’, ‘Mr Baseball’ and ‘Killers’.

During his ±60-year career, Selleck won 8 awards, including 4 People’s Choice, a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Plate.  He also received an honorary degree and a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
