CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY TODAY... MICHAEL J. FOX

Canadian actor, author, producer and activist Michael Andrew Fox was born 64 year ago in Alberta, Canada, is married and has 4 children.

When he was 15 years old, Michael was given a role in a Canadian TV series and 3 years later, he moved to the US to proceed with his career in acting.  He made his debut on US TV in the movie ‘Letters from Frank’ and then went on the act in two films in 1980 and 1982.

He then became a real star and a teen idol when he performed in the sitcom ‘Family Ties’ which ran between 1982 and 1989.  In fact, he received 3 Emmy awards and a Golden Globe award for his part.

In 1985, whilst still casting in ‘Family Ties’, Michael was offered to play Marty McFly in the famous movie ‘Back to the Future’.  Actually, he was asked to replace Eric Stoltz who was already filming that character, since the movie director felt that Eric was not good enough for that role. Michael accepted and it turned out that the film was so successful that another 2 sequels followed, released in 1989 and 1990.

Fox also starred in other movies like ‘Teen Wolf’ and ‘The Secret of my Success’ concurrently with the filming of ‘Back to the Future’.  He continued his acting career also during the 90s, with his last significant role in 1996.  He also voiced characters in some Disney animated films like the ‘Stuart Little’ trilogy, amongst others.

Until his retirement in 2021, Michael starred in several other movies and TV series, as well as hosted some TV shows and even produced some TV series episodes and a movie.  The reason for retiring was due to Parkinson’s Disease, which he was diagnosed with in 1991, and made public by himself 7 years later.  In May this year, however, Fox made a brief return to acting as he was cast in the comedy drama series ‘Shrinking’.

Following his diagnosis, Michael created the Michael J Fox Foundation in the year 2000, in order to raise funds for research to find a cure for this disease.  He has also published 4 books.

In June last year, Fox was invited by British rock band ‘Coldplay’ and played the guitar on a couple of their songs at the Glastonbury Festival held in the UK.

During his career, Michael received numerous awards including 5 Emmy, 4 Golden Globe, 2 Screen Actors Guild and an Emmy, amongst others.  He was also inducted in both the Canada and the Hollywood Walks of Fame, received 2 honorary doctorates and was also chosen as an ‘Order of Canada’ officer.  This year, Michael received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former US president Joe Biden.
