American former actress and model Phoebe Belle Cates Kline was born 61 years ago in New York City, is married to actor Kevin Kline and has 2 children.
After attending a college preparatory school and a private performing arts conservatory, Phoebe started modelling at the age of 10, appearing in several magazines. She wished to become a dancer and managed to obtained a scholarship for a ballet school, however, she was constrained to stop in view of a knee injury when she was 14 years old. She then started a modelling career, which although successful, did not render her very happy and admitted that she just did it for money.
After quitting modelling, she tried her luck in acting and was offered a role in the 1982 movie ‘Paradise’, also singing the film’s theme song as well as recording an album bearing the same name. She felt uncomfortable performing nude scenes and later stated that she regretted being part of this film.
That same year, Cates starred in a comedy movie ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ and the following year was cast in another comedy film named ‘Private School’. She then had a role in the 1984 mini-series ‘Lace’ as well as its sequel ‘Lace II’, interpreting the character of Lili.
1984 continued to be very busy for Phoebe – in summer she appeared in the box office hit movie ‘Gremlins’ as well as performed for the first time in a stage play off Broadway.
Until she quit acting in 2001, Cates starred in 12 more movies and/or TV productions including ‘Gremlins 2: the New Batch’, ‘Drop dead Fred’ and ‘Princess Caraboo’. In 2015, she voiced the character of Kate Beringer in the video game ‘Lego Dimensions’.
