German singer, songwriter and producer Thomas Anders was born 61 years ago as Bernd Weidung in Koblenz, is married and has a son. He was the lead singer of duo ‘Modern Talking’.
Thomas started showing interest in music at an early age, and as a kid took singing and piano lessons. When he was 6 years old, he debuted on stage in a children’s play and 4 years later, he won a singing competition amongst 100 other kids. The winning prize was singing schlager music and children’s songs in a music hall.
He attended secondary school and later university where he studied musicology, German studies and publishing, with the intention of becoming a music journalist. Whilst still studying, Thomas was offered a contract and released 3 ‘Schlager’ genre singles, which, however, were all unsuccessful. After meeting producer Dieter Bohlen, they collaborated together and released a number of tracks of the same music genre, but once again, they failed to be successful.
Dieter then came up with the idea of changing music genre to Eurodisco, which led to the creation of the famous duo ‘Modern Talking’. They rose to instant fame and became very popular worldwide. They had numerous hits like ‘You’re my Heart, You’re My Soul’, ‘You can win if you Want’, ‘Cheri Cheri Lady’, ‘Brother Louie’, ‘Atlantis is Calling’, ‘No Face No Name No Number’ and sold millions of records globally. In 1987, however, the duo went their own ways due to several disagreements but reunited again 11 years later in 1998, and released various songs. Albeit, in 2003, they split once again.
Thomas proceeded with his career as a solo artist after both dissolvements but did not achieve the same success as with Modern Talking. Albeit, he was very popular in European Eastern Countries like Russia, Poland and even issued an album in Spanish which went well too in Spain. In the 2000’s, he issued an album in his native language, German, after 35 years since he started his singing career.
As ‘Modern Talking’, Thomas released 32 albums and 20 singles (5 of which were number one hits), whilst as a solo artist he had 19 albums and 41 singles as lead artist and 4 singles as featured artist. He also co-wrote songs for other singers and sang in duet with Glenn Madeiros and The Pointer Sisters, amongst others.
