TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... LOU BEGA

German singer Lou Bega was born 49 years ago as David Lubega Balemezi in Munich, is married and has a daughter.  His father is from Uganda whilst his mother is Sicilian, and he is an only child.

Lou’s career began in 1988, when together with two other guys he formed a hip-hop group.  However, it was only in 1990 that they released their first CD.  In his teenage years, he went to Miami, USA, and came across Latin music.

Bega is known for his ability to combine 40’s and 50’s music with modern rhythms, which led him to ‘adjust’ an instrumental piece released in 1949 by Perez Prado.  The result was his debut single named ‘Mambo No 5 (a little bit of…)’, which turned out to be a number one worldwide hit in 1999, particularly in numerous countries across Europe.  In France alone, it remained in first place for 20 weeks.

That same year, Lou’s debut album came out, and featured some more successful singles like ‘I got a Girl’, ‘Tricky, Tricky’ and ‘Mambo Mambo’.  In 2001, his second album was issued, however, it did not fare well as the first one, albeit, it did include a couple of singles which satisfactorily featured in some music charts.  After that, Bega released 4 more studio albums, the latest one issued in 2021.

Lou appeared in various TV shows like ‘Ally McBeal’ and ‘Queen Latifah’ as well as performed on stage for royalties and international organisations.  He also hosted prestigious events like the Grammy and American Music Awards, and provided songs and music videos for Disney channels.

In 2001, Bega received 2 World Music Awards for World’s Best Selling New Male Artist and World’s Best Selling German Artist.
