New Zealand-born actor, film director and singer Russell Ira Crowe was born 61 years ago in Wellington, is divorced and has 2 sons.

At the age of 4, Russell and his family moved to Australia and there he attended grammar and high school.  As a child, he acted briefly in a series.  When Russell was 14, his family moved back to New Zealand and he continued his studies, however, he left school 2 years later to fulfil his acting dream.

In the beginning of the 80s, Russell tried his luck as a musician and released some singles, however, none of them entered the charts.  So, he left New Zealand and went back to Australia with the intention of studying at a dramatic art institute, but he decided not to apply as according to someone, he had gained the necessary experience from working at a theatre.

In the last 3 decades, Russell was cast in numerous movies including major ones like ‘Gladiator’, ‘The Insider’, ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and ‘L.A. Confidential’.  Some other films he starred in are ‘Cinderella Man’, ‘Robin Hood’, ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Noah’, ‘The Mummy’, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’.  In 2024 alone, he acted in no less than 5 films, namely ‘Land of Bad’, ‘Sleeping Dogs’, ‘The Exorcism’, ‘Gladiator II’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter’.  He has also written, directed and produced several movies and documentaries.  Crowe will also be starring in 4 upcoming films: ‘Rothko’, ‘Nuremberg’, ‘The Beast in Me’ and ‘Bear Country’.

Apart from his acting career, Russell is also a musician and has formed some music bands, released several songs and toured different countries to promote their material.  He is also into sports, especially rugby, cricket and football.  Being a philanthropist, Crowe has supported some schools in his native New Zealand as well as funded other foreign charitable organisations or events.

During his long career, Russell appeared in 61 feature films, 12 TV series and a documentary.  He received 31 awards including 18 Critics’, 1 Academy, 2 Golden Globe, 4 AACTA and 1 BAFTA, amongst others.  In 2022, he was appointed ambassador of Rome in the world by its mayor.
