Jamaican reggae musician Ziggy Marley was born 56 years ago as David Nesta Marley in the capital city of Kingston, is married and has 7 children. His father is reggae music idol Bob Marley.
Ziggy grew up in a music environment, in view that both his parents were singers. At a young age, his dad taught him the drums and the guitar and by the time he was 10 years old, Ziggy was present when his father’s band ‘The Wailers’ recorded their tracks.
Some time later, Marley and some classmates formed the group ‘The Seven Do Bees’ and performed together. In the late 70s, Ziggy and his brother Stephen joined their father in some of his big concerts given both in their native Jamaica as well as internationally. He also formed the band ‘Melody Makers’ together with 3 of his siblings. Their dad composed the song ‘Children on the Streets’ and they debuted with it. Later on they performed on stage when Ziggy was just 11 years old.
After his dad’s demise in 1981, Ziggy joined ‘The Wailers’ and gave performances with them around the country and then they embarked on a tour. As ‘Melody Makers’, the group had 10 albums, and they disbanded in 2002. Marley then continued his career as a solo artist and his debut album came out in 2003. It includes the hit single ‘True to Myself’.
To date, Ziggy had 15 albums and 12 singles. He also wrote numerous tracks for other artists as well as interpreted some of them. Marley also appeared in several TV shows and movies, as well as voiced animated characters in films like ‘Shark Tale’ and ‘Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse’.
Ziggy is an avid philanthropist and over the years has supported numerous charitable institutions, particularly those concerning children, peace and the environment. During his career so far, he won 8 Grammy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award, amongst others.
