American musician, singer-songwriter and actor Glenn Lewis Frey was born on 6th November 1948 and passed away on 8th January 2016. He was married and had 3 children.
At just 5 years old, Glenn took piano lessons and later learnt the guitar. During his teenage years, whilst still in high school, he joined a band named ‘The Subterraneans’ and after graduating was invited to become a member of another group ‘Four of Us’. In 1967, it was Glenn who founded the band ‘The Mushrooms’. Meanwhile, he met artist Bob Seger who wrote their debut single and they appeared in TV shows to boost it. That same year, Frey formed another band called ‘Heavy Metal Kids’.
In 1970, Glenn met drummer Don Henley and the following year they founded ‘The Eagles’. Apart from being one of the lead vocalists, he also played the guitar and keyboards, as well as co-wrote the majority of the band’s tracks with Henley. The band had many successful worldwide hits like ‘Hotel California’, ‘New Kid in Town’ and ‘Tequila Sunrise’ and are considered as one of best-selling groups ever.
After 9 years, the band broke up and Frey embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album in 1982. Four more albums were released after that, as well as 19 singles and 14 music videos. He had 2 hits which reached number 2 on the US chart, namely ‘The Heat is On’ in 1984, which is the soundtrack of the movie ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ starring Eddie Murphy and ‘You Belong to the City’ the year after, which is also the soundtrack of the crime drama TV series ‘Miami Vice’, starring Don Johnson. Apart from music, Glenn has also starred in some films and TV series.
‘The Eagles’ did reunite after a 14-year hiatus, including Glenn and they immediately embarked on a tour. Together with his fellow band members, Frey received 6 Grammy and 5 American Music Awards and the band was also inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Frey passed away on 8th January 2016 from complications of rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia and ulcerative colitis at the age of 67.
