TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... SHARLEEN SPITERI

Scottish singer-songwriter Sharleen Eugene Spiteri was born 57 years ago in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, is married and has a daughter.

As a teenager, Sharleen showed interest in pop music and was highly inspired by big artists like Diana Ross, Prince, Blondie, Marvin Gaye and ‘The Clash’.  She got a job at a hairdressing salon and whilst working there, she co-founded the rock band ‘Texas’ in 1988.

The following year, they released an EP, followed by their debut album a few months later.  It featured the international hit single ‘I Don’t Want a Lover’ which reached 8th place on the UK charts, and which made the group famous.  The two albums that were issued afterwards were not as successful as expected, but then in 1997, there was a positive turn with the release of the band’s 4th album which, apart from reaching number one on the UK charts, included the single ‘Say What You Want’.  It peaked to number 3 on the UK’s singles’ chart, thus becoming the group’s best charting track to date.

By the end of the 90s, ‘Texas’ had 5 more UK chart Top 10 singles which were ‘Halo’, ‘Black Eyed Boy’, ‘Put your arms around Me’, ‘In our Lifetime’ and ‘Summer Son’.  After the band’s 7th album was issued in 2005, they decided to take a break.  At this point, Sharleen embarked on a solo career and went on to release 2 albums and 5 singles between 2008 and 2010.

After an 8-year hiatus, ‘Texas’ reunited and resumed to release more albums and singles, the latest issued in 2023.

Apart from music, Spiteri has appeared in a few TV shows, loves gardening and is also a car enthusiast.  She also supports a children’s cancer charitable institution.
