American rapper ‘Salt’ was born as Cheryl Renee James 58 years ago in New York City, is divorced and has 2 children. She forms part of the rap group ‘Salt ‘N’ Pepa’.
Cheryl attended high school as a teen, and after graduating, she enrolled with a college to study nursing.
Salt’s career started in 1985, when she formed the group ‘Super Nature’ together with a school mate and another girl. This band was eventually changed to Salt ‘N’ Pepa. Over an 11-year period, they released 5 studio albums. During the 80s, they had a US Top 20 hit, ‘Push It’ whilst during the 90s their most popular hits were ‘Let’s Talk about Sex’, ‘Whatta Man’, ‘Shake your Thang’ and ‘Champagne’.
In 1993, Salt starred in the movie ‘Who’s the Man?’ and also in the reality TV series ‘Salt ‘N’ Pepa Show’ in 2008.
In 1995, Cheryl and her fellow group members won a Grammy Award for the Best Rap Performance by a Duo/Group with the song ‘None of your Business’ after being nominated numerous times.
