CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY TODAY... ALAN SORRENTI

Italian singer and composer Alan Sorrenti was born 74 years ago in Naples, Italy, is divorced and has a son.

Alan’s mum is Welsh, and he spent most of his childhood years in the seaside town of Aberystwyth, Wales.  In view of this, he speaks both English and Italian fluently, and has also recorded tracks in both languages.

Highly inspired by big artists like Peter Hamill, Tim Buckley and Shawn Philips, Sorrenti’s career began in the early 70s, experimenting in progressive rock music.  His debut album was released in 1972, followed by a second one the year after.  That same year, he participated in a music event called ‘Festival Pop’ of Viterbo and in 1975 published a 45 laps which was very successful.

His third album was different from the previous ones as it consisted of melodic songs, portraying the singer’s period of crisis.  Despite this, the album was quite successful – it featured a cover version of a famous Neapolitan track named ‘Dicitencello Vuje’ which was also issued as a single.

The next two albums released in 1977 and 1979 consisted of disco music songs amongst which there are the 2 most popular hits ‘Figli Delle Stelle’ and ‘Tu sei l’unica donna per Me’.  This track was also recorded in English and with it Alan won the Italian yearly summer music event ‘Festivalbar’ of 1979.  Its 45 laps was also the highest sold in his native Italy.

In 1980, Alan represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest with the track ‘Non so che Darei’, placing 6th.  During the rest of the 80s, Sorrenti published two albums, however, they did not obtain the expected success as the previous ones did.  After a 5-year hiatus, Alan returned to the music scene by releasing a new album from which the track ‘Come per Miracolo’ was chosen to participate in the yearly San Remo Festival.

From the next decade to date, Alan had 3 more studio albums, 7 collections and 4 singles.  Apart from music, he has also acted in 2 Italian movies.

In 2014, Alan received the FIM Award for Best Songwriter.
